Match report Y.M.C.A. 1st XI v The Hills 1st XI
DGM League
Sunday 20th April 2008
at Claremont Road, Sandymount

YM Debut(s): Adam Rice & Rob Nandi

Rain ensured a delayed start and a reduction in overs. The Hills who had won the toss decided to bowl first on a wet and miserable day. YM made steady, if unspectacular progress to reach 40 for 2, then four quick wickets fell with the score on 59. James 'Jammer' Shortt making a nicely compiled 25 before his untimely run out. No other wicket fell after that and they were indebted to a partnership of 59 by Rob Nandi (26*) making his YM debut after his move from Phoenix C.C. and Paul Beacroft (30*) at nearly a run-a-ball, in reaching a final score of 118 for 6 after their allotted 30 overs. The Hills bowled well and in keeping the score under 4 an over they would have been pleased and confident.
After the tea break, which seemed to consist only of a cup of tea!, The Hills reply started with the loss of an early wicket taken by Adam Rice, another YM debutant. After that J. Bray showed his class and form after a winter playing in Melbourne, Australia to score a fine fifty from 42 balls, with the score moving onto 76 for 2. But his departure saw a middle order collapse where the YM bowlers took 6 wickets for 28 runs, leaving the score on 104 for 8. James Shortt took 2 fine slip catches but the 'CHAMPAGNE MOMENT' came when the captain who had wisely positioned himself at cover point took an excellent catch low down...in his knees.
Needing 16 to win with 2 wickets left and plenty of overs The Hills did have a scare when Simon Wilson-Moore (overlooked in the bowling department) spilled a chance at mid-on, which could have made for a nail biting ending. It was not to be and The Hills won by 2 wickets. All the bowlers made the opposing batsman work hard for their runs, with Jonny Harte particularly impressive taking 2 for 7 and Paul Beacroft topping an excellent match with 3 for 22, but in the end and with the help of 21 extras, Bray was the difference.
