Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club 1st XI v North County 1 on Sat 21 May 2016 at 11.00am
Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club Won by 36 runs (DLS)

Match report WHATEVER the league woes, there’s definitely a cup fever around Claremont Road these days. The first XI have chalked up excellent victories in the first round of the Leinster and Irish Senior Cups, and there are great hopes already for another sunny Saturday this summer when silverware will be hoisted.

The Irish Senior Cup draw will see us travel to Fox Lodge for the second round. The North West side, whose ground is a few hundred metres from Bready, had a good first round win in Rathmines, when Cricket Ireland official Brian Allen scored 94.

‘The Foxies’ were relegated from the NW Premier League two years ago and only missed out on promotion on net run rate. South African pro Marco Marais, who has turned out for the North West Warriors, and all-rounder Jason Milligan are others to be wary of.

The Leinster Senior Cup campaign also got under way with a win over North County at Claremont Road. The Fingalacticos had chalked up a league win back in April, but revenge was sweet for Simmi’s side.

The morning was bright and warm, and County had full use of their 60 overs. Newly-called up to Ireland A, Yaqoob Ali made the early breakthroughs and then returned to end the middle-order resistance. Best of luck to the Yak, and Seán and Jack in their Ireland A game against MCC in Bready this week.

County were reduced to 48-3 but as in the league game were rescued by captain Eddie Richardson, who starred in partnerships of 94 (with Jono Andrews) and 77 (Nathan Rooney) to bring them over 200. But Yak (5-34) and Simmi (2-66) ensured the total was manageable.

Rain struck in the afternoon however, and the increasingly heavy showers cut deeply into the overs on offer. Although Tom Fisher went for 15 with the score on 27, Simmi (41 off 44 balls) and JT (38 off 86) ensured YM were ahead of Duckworth Lewis when play was eventually abandoned. They were a full 36 runs of the rate when the innings closed on 104-1 and go into the quarter-finals on June 11th.
