Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v North County 3rd XI
At The Nevitt
Leinster Division 4 League
This was a high scoring match with some sparkling innings' but in truth saw another poor performance from YM both in the field and with the ball.
North County won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a firm deck, lightening outfield and some short boundaries.
YM started off well enough getting rid of the two experienced openers. Runs however were coming quickly. A 3rd wicket fell at 82 and soon after the first costly mistake. Singh (126) hit the ball high to mid-wicket where a relatively easy chance was spilled. He was on about 40! Another easy dropped catch soon afterwards and a missed stumping only highlighted this. North County put on 61 runs for the 4th wkt and 62 for the 5th as they passed 200.
Catches do win matches but the YM bowling was ordinary and lacked real thought. Seamers bowled too wide and too full. Most of the time these deliveries crashed over the boundaries with ease. The spinners bowled far too many full tosses giving the batsmen easy runs. With wickets in hand, plenty of overs left and more importantly Singh who cashed in on his dropped chance North County were always going to reach 300.
It was a real disappointment that the bowlers did not react to the conditions and failed to bowl to the right line and length more consistently.
The fielding left a lot to be desired. 306 was about 80 too many.
After tea the YM innings began with an opening stand of 73 in 16 overs between Minch (33, 5x4s)) and Streek (37, 6x4s). Chris Minch batted very well punishing any loose deliveries and looking good. Unfortunately both fell in the space of 1 over.
Simon Wilson Moore (32, 5x4s)) dominated a 3rd wicket partnership of 49 with Skipper Steven Walsh. However, North County took a 4th wicket to leave the scoreboard reading 137/4 after 29 overs.
What followed was the highest partnership of the match as Walsh & Andrew Mowatt (40, 4x4s, 1x6) exploded putting on 98 in just under 12 overs for the 5th wicket.
Andrew Mowatt batted extremely well for a 15 year old and there is much promise to look forward to with his batting. This partnership should have won the game for YM as the home side's bowling and fielding also wilted under the pressure.
Score: 237/5 in 40 overs. 70 needed in 10 overs with 5 wickets left.
North County took another wicket soon after but the crucial wicket of Walsh (83, 4x6s, 6x6s) who started off cautiously but who then excelerated with some beautiful clean hitting was the killer blow. The tail, even with overs left could never get going again and the innings subsided to 260 all out. Almost 5 overs were un-used.
This was a great effort by the team to chase down a daunting target.
However YM made it too easy for the North County batsmen and this was where the game was lost.
