Match report On a bright hot sunny afternoon in Claremont Road, the 1st XI took on Instonians CC from the NCU in their second friendly of the season.
With the return of the captain Strydom, Lewis, Hosford, Walsh and Dunlop the team were at near strength. Instonians won the toss and fielded first. Strydom went earlier chasing a wide one to the keeper. Lewis playing in his 33rd year of senior cricket had a few close shouts early on in his innings but dug in. Vice-captain Hosford looked steady until he was needlessly run out. Van Der Merwe joined Lewis and they took on all the visitors bowlers as they plundered 163 runs in 26 overs with shots all around the ground. Lewis once again to the fore making a fine century 104 (8x4s, 5x6s) before he retired. Van Der Merwe was equally attractive making a very good 75 (8x4s, 1x6). After that the innings fell away from this great partnership as only 66 runs were scored in the last 12 overs giving a final total of 250/9.
In reply the visitors lost an early enough wicket with the score on 29, McCoy taking a catch behind off Strydom. Runs then came steadily before two quick wickets pegged back Instonians to 77/3. Dutt took the crucial wicket of White with the score on 117 before Morrow & Moleon took on the YM spinners. Some lusty blows by both brought the visitors back into the game as they put on 80 runs in 12 overs. But when both fell in quick succession the run-rate crept up in YMs favour. Lewis came on at the death to pick up the 'bunnies' finishing with 3/33 and the match was won by 17 runs.
A good game, lots of runs, lots of positives and an eye on the summer ahead as YM look to the spin approach.

Next week the 1st league match of 2011 as The Hills CC visit Claremont Road...
