Match report
YMCA 3rd XI v North Wicklow XI
At Claremont Road
Whelan Cup - 1st Rd. Southern Section
After the initial debate whether to play on a recently watered track, it was decided to use the mat rather than dig up the track that is to be used by the 1st XI on Friday. Having won the toss, we decided to bat with Josh and the skipper opening the innings. After a good couple of overs, the skipper trapsed back to the pavilion having successfully picked out a fielder. Josh and John continued on with John keeping his eyes on the ball in a manner that he had not hoped when it lodged in his helmet. He then replied with a series of sixes including one into a crowd of unsuspecting polish soccer players. Tim took over from Josh and then Ravi replaced John. Ravi repeatedly gave himself space for the big hit and did so once too often. It then fell to Lee to show us all that bat on ball and finding the gaps can keep the score ticking over and helped us to make it to 151 with John top scoring for the second match in a row.
In reply, North Wicklow had difficulty in dealing with Josh and Dave “DC” Cooke’s opening spells. DC threw up a classic even slower slow ball leaving the batsman bemused and walking towards the pavilion wondering what had happened. The slow mo wobble had left the batsman stranded with time to watch Lee whip off the bails. It reminded me of the famous dead ball from Gregg Chappell – well dead
bird story when the batsman was surprised after being bowled only to discover that the ball had hit a low flying swallow and deflected onto the stumps at the Adelaide Oval. North Wicklow’s wickets continued to fall and runs were difficult to find. Good fielding saved runs and catches held by Johnny Byrnes and Ryan. The batsmen did not like the change bowlers any better with Ravi and Tim starving the batsmen of runs and generally getting the ball hit in the air for the fielders to catch. Further catches were held. Eventually the innings ground to a halt on 111. It was a great performance by all in the field including the ever-watchful Kamal who is our coach. We must be one of the only clubs to have such a valuable resource available to the 3rds.
Overall it was another very good team performance with all contributing as at Phoenix. It was our best performance in the 20 over / 15 eight ball competition in years and we look forward to the next round on 22nd (away to Merrion or Railway). But before then a league match or two and then a cup match on the day before (Sunday 21st July 2009)
The evening finished with the skipper and vice captain being chased half dressed from the changing room by the exceptionally impatient and overanxious manageress from the Association. Its fun to play at the YMCA!
