Match report YMCA 3rd XI v Phoenix 4th XI
At The Phoenix Park
Intermediate A League

Eventually the weather gave us a day to play cricket on, after the two cancelled matches of the previous weekend, with the venue being Phoenix. Having won the toss, Phoenix decided to bat on a wicket that looked like it should suit the batsmen.

But from the start, our bowlers applied pressure with Josh Van de Flier and the ever-lethal Dave Cooke bowling from the Liffey end. Dave Cooke sent the young opener back to the pavilion (as many victims wondering what had happened) with 6 on the board before Josh got in on the act as well. Callum Donnelly and James ‘JimJam’ Smith both came on and bowled their five overs very successfully with Callum taking two wickets and James bowling a good length and line and conceding 8 runs in his spell. Phoenix were always slow and crawled to 50 for 4 before the spinners came on. Ravi rattled through his 8 overs taking 3 wickets for 23, barely giving the batsmen time to think between balls. Matthew Quirke bowled his 7 overs taking the important wicket of the Phoenix stalwart, D Pigot. Michael Browne helped Phoenix over the hundred with Phoenix ending up with 116 for 9 in their forty overs. All in all it was a very good performance in the field with Ryan Bailey taking two catches and Susheel saving runs whenever the ball went near him. On the last ball, a run out gave us maximum bowling points which was just reward for the consistency of all in the field.

After tea, Ryan Bailey and Josh opened and frustrated Phoenix’s openers by taking the score to 39 before Josh was out for 24 off 41 balls. John Souter joined Ryan and brought the score to 59 before Ryan was bowled for 14. Susheel hit a quick 15 before being bowled and John finished on 50 not out.

Overall it was a comprehensive win by 6 wickets made possible by the good bowling performance by all seven bowlers – especially Callum, Matthew and James who were bowling for the 3rds for the first time.
