A 105 run partnership between Paul Beacroft and Angus Dunlop helped YMCA to a three wicket victory over North County, in what was for both sides their opening match in the DGM 45 over league. Having won the toss North County captain for the day Conor Armstrong elected to bat.

With an eleven o’clock start YMCA made full use of the conditions and when drinks were taken at 23 overs they had restricted North County to 77 for the loss of three wickets. After drinks Warwick Armstrong (2 -57 off 9 overs), the YM captain, and Stu McCready (3 – 32 off 9 overs) continued to restrict the runs so much so that when the 7th wicket fell in the 37th over North County had only amassed 133 runs and a sub 200 figure looked likely.

However Terry Richardson had other ideas as he smashed a quick fire 41 off 21 balls to lift his side to 194 when the 8th wicket fell in the 42nd over. At the close of their innings North County had got to 226 for 9 , their cause helped significantly by the 40 Ernie Extras YMCA had gifted them.

YM innings got off to worst possible start as they lost their first wicket with only 2 overs gone. YM staged something of a recovery as they reached 34 when the 2nd wicket fell and an additional 47 was added for the 4th. But the turn point of the match was when Angus Dunlop joined Paul Beacroft and the pair proceeded to add 105 runs in 15 overs.

The partnership was finally broken in the 32nd over when Richie Lawrence took the wicket of Angus Dunlop (53 off 49 balls) and he followed it up next ball with the wicket of Paul Beacroft, out for a very fine 68 off 77 balls. The double wicket over put North County in with a shout and left YM needing 41 runs for victory. A 21 run 6th wicket partnership eased YM nerves and frustrated North County.

Lawrence was once again the bowler to break the stand and he followed it up in the 38th over to claim his 4th wicket, but his efforts were in vein as YM were in touching distance of victory on 224 for 7. The victory was sealed 8 balls later in the 40th over. For North County the pick of the bowlers was most definitely Lawrence as he ended up with figures of 4-44 off his 9 overs.
