YMCA Salver 20 Over Cup Match
Tuesday 10th June 2008
at Park Avenue
IF ONLY!, doesn't it always feel like that when you lose a game that you maybe, could have, should have won...
YM won the toss and batted first on a under-prepared wicket. After Ross Johnson dispatched the first ball of the innings for 4 back over the bowlers head YM then lost 2 quick wickets as the first 10 overs were a struggle with the hosts bowling tidely. Special mention must be made of the Railway bowler Furqan Ul Haq with figures of 5-2-8-0. The batsmen found it hard to hit the boundaries but Johnny Harte 44 (1x6) worked 'his socks' off and scampered between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking over. At 89/5 Greg Thompson 10* joined Sonny Singh 20* for the final 3 overs and between them they added over 30 runs to the total. The innings closed on 122/6.
In reply Railway got off to a flier and they did find the boundaries regularly. In fact throughout their innings they produced a boundary when they needed it most. The YM fielding was on the whole good, Rory Anderson reacting well to produce a run out at the bowlers end and Johnny Harte capping a fine all-round game with 2 catches to go along with his bowling of 2/19. Benn Hoey was rewarded with 2 wickets for his fine bowling at a difficult time and Greg Thompson kept very well. YM fought back well and the Railway batsmen were made to fight all the way for their victory which they eventually claimed with 9 deliveries remaining and keep alive their hopes of 'the promise to a holiday of their choosing'...
And with defeat the 2nds winning run comes to an end..."c'est la vie!"
Next up another cup match, in 'sunny cabra' and in the words of Iain Dowie 'bouncebackability'...
