Match report Y.M.C.A. 2nd XI v Old Belvedere 2nd XI

Sunday 15th June 2008
at Cabra Oval

Preparations and selection for this match were badly disrupted. With a number of players unavailable for various reasons, some dubious!, it could not get any worse on the day of the game, could it?

The hosts won the toss and asked YM to bat first on a wicket that looked under-prepared. However a good start saw Rob Whyte (Kiwi) 24 and Tim Shannon (Aussie) 14 put together a nice little partnership of 40 in the first 8 overs. Then with little warning 3 wickets fell very quickly. Niall Noonan (21) was then joined by Derek 'run-machine' Dockrell (17) and they steadied the innings on a wicket that was now beginning to break up. Another little partnership between Niall and D.M.Streek (34) developed before another batch of wickets fell to leave the scoreboard reading 127/8. To reach the final total of 152 was down to a fine partnership by Benn Hoey and Winot Sharma who put on 25 for the last wicket. (YM only fielded 10 men in this cup match).
At the half way stage this total did not look that bad considering the state of the wicket.
The early bowling of both Rory Anderson and Tim Shannon lifted spirits and with Belvo on 40 odd/4, things looked positive. Tim was on a hat-trick at one stage. Added to the fact that there were two very BIG decisions that did not go YMs way (no official umpires present as the teams umpired their own innings) the score could have read 40 odd/6. But that was as good as it got as the two Belvo batsmen took advantage of their 'good fortune' and took their team to within victory until Rory Anderson returned to claim a consolation wicket.
Belvo reached their target and finished on 158/5 to win by 5 wkts.

But it was not a pleasant game to play in and it did leave a bad taste in ones mouth.
We had in the team a lot of young players who did very well in trying conditions and circumstances and if they go away and learn from this sort of game and the lengths some opponents will stretch too in order to win a game then that will stand them in good stead for the future.
After all..."It's only a game?"
