Match report YMCA CC V Malahide
At The Village, Malahide
Division 1 League

With five teams locked together at the foot of Divison 1, matches like this will be close fought encounters. This certainly was as YMCA beat Malahide by just 13 runs

Batting first, YM were quickly reduced to 32 for 4 as Peter Saville and Reece McDonald scythed through their top order. Rob Nandi and Sean McAuley rebuilt and had taken the score to 72 by drinks. But Jim Govan had settled into a rhythm and he induced Nandi to hole out to long off for 24. McAuley continued his resistance as Govan worked his way through the middle order before he too bcame one of Govan's victims for 38. The openers returned to clean out the tail and the innings closed in the 46th over for 154, with Govan (4 for 24), McDonald (3 for18) and Saville (3 for 31) the successful bowlers.

Malahide's response started cautiously against Jim Parkinson and Reinhardt Strydom's accuracy with the score just 24 for 1 after 14 overs. If the plan was to accelerate against the change bowlers, it backfired as Paul Beacroft quickly removed Adam Coughlan, Fintan McAllister and Reece McDonald leaving the home side at 31 for 4 at the start of the 19th over.

Enter Nick Turner - a man in a hurry. The remaining five balls of Beacroft's over went for 13, Parkinson returned and his one over went for 18, then Strydom's next for 6. Meanwhile at the other end Govan had started to tuck into Etysham Ahmed and in the six overs to drinks the score advanced from 31 to 90! A double bowling change after drinks did the trick as Turner checked his stroke to give Johnny Harte a straightforward caught and bowled. But with Govan well set, 23 over left and little more than 60 runs required all it needed was for someone to stay with Govan.

Easier said than done. John Pryor played tip and run with inevitable consequences and Phil Markey tried to hit the ball into the castle grounds with equally inevitable consequences.. Callum Riches and Peter Saville came and went and when Glenn Kirwan hesitated fatally whilst contemplating a second run, Malahide were all out for 141 with Govan undefeated on 57. Beacroft (3 for 21) and McAuley (2 for 11) were the most successful of the bowlers.
