Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v Phoenix 2nd XI
At Claremont Road.
Leinster Division 4 League
Debuts: J.Tector & P.Flanagan.
Winning the toss again YM gave the visitors the first chance on a good track which had been used the previous day for the 1st XI.
Birthday Boy Warwick Armstrong removed one of the Phoenix openers quickly and both he and Umar Jehangir bowled sharply with bounce and pace. They were unlucky not to have more wickets. Phoenix dug in, played and missed often and had a good 2nd wicket partnership. All the time Stuart McCready (10-0-28-2), on his first outing of the summer, bowled with great pace and accuracy picking up 2 wickets. James Smith at the other end produced a fine spell of 5-0-16-0 and showed great heart and desire. However, wickets were not taken and the Phoenix batsmen Nazir (50) and Cavanagh (52*) played very well taking the score past 200. Neel Bhandari took 2 wickets and probably should have bowled more. Lee Cole kept well and picked up 3 catches. The ground fielding was ordinary and a few chances were spilled. Extras (41) were to be the next highest score, far too many, and the final total of 220/7 was a disappointment to the home side.
So for the second week running YM had to chase a competitive score and in their reply they lost Lee Cole early on. McCready came in and took the Phoenix attack on hitting a quick fire 28 which included 5x4s. The 50 came up in the 11th over and things were on track. But Smacker was then unexpectedly bowled by the leg-spinner who also accounted for Ryan Bailey. Johnny Harte (19) came in and with Streek took the score along to 100 in the 22nd over before he drilled one to gully which the fielder did well to hang onto. Jack Tector, who was making his debut at this level looked good but fell cheaply and with the score on 106/5 Phoenix had high hopes. However, Neel Bhandari (28) proved dificult to remove, playing some top shots and with Streek recorded a 6th wicket partnership of 59 which swayed the game back in YMs favour but when he was out to a mis-timed drive at 165/6 there was still much work to do. 'Cometh the hour, cometh the man' and Wazza strode to the wicket. With a full face of the bat and great drives he played the innings of his brief but entertaining life and scored a crucial 22 runs (3x4s) as he and Streek added another 49 runs to close in on victory. However, not wanting to make it too easy Wazza had an almighty wind and was bowled with the winning target in his sights and then Phoenix took another wicket just to make things interesting. But it was not to be as YM scored the winning runs in the 47th over to win by 2 wickets as Streek finished on 85* (10x4s 1x6).
