Cup Match
Leinster (home) 5th July, 11th / 13th July 2009

Before we could start, the rain descended on our first attempt to play the second round of the cup last Saturday week. So we watched the rain, captains conferred and agreed that the scheduled league match a week later might give us a good opportunity to play a full 40 over match. The only action of the afternoon was tea and the game of football in the rain.

We returned a week later intent on putting in a good performance. Leinster won the toss and elected to bat: this decision was no doubt based on the sight of the YM legend James Gatsby Fitzgerald in our line up. For those of you not familiar we had Fitz released from the ICC and repatriated for part of the season. He informed me that his last game had been at Lords (I suspect that it was not the main square but more likely to be a game of stump out the back).
We opened with our usual attack of Dave Cooke and Tim Shannon who did their usual combination of movement and lift managed to dispose of the first four batsmen. The opener, who was under strict instructions from the Leinster captain not to take any chances against DC, proceeded to disregard the advice and was soon reacquainted with his skipper. Both bowlers bowled straight through and each took a pair of wickets. Neelo and Rory A took over and continued to apply pressure before Leinster found themselves at 75 for 7. At this stage, the exYM Charlie Richards came to the wicket and hung around for the remaining overs and despite tidy bowling from Niall, John Orr and Ryan at the end, Leinster made it to 149. It was a good performance in the field but we lacked the intensity of some of our previous performance. Ravi put his body on the line and ended up rebreaking a finger saving runs: we hope to see him back before the end of the season.
However it was a total that we were happy to chase.
After tea, the rain came and the skippers conferred with their teams on availability and the negotiations started. After 20 hours of negotiations, Monday 13th was agreed as the first available night after Leinster proposed Tuesday when they would have all their bowlers and our proposal for 20th July (when Tim would be back). No matter when we played, we were going to be to be at least one player down. Leinster were informed that subfielders would not be allowed seeing as we were down players.
During Monday afternoon the captain checked the regs, texted the team telling everyone to be down because the regs dictated a bowl out if no play was possible, answered texts (including whether whites are necessary for a bowl out) and liaised with Leinster.
So we arrived down with 8.5 players (Tim and Fitz not being available and Ravi with a broken finger). Heavy rain during the day got under the covers; the YM Ground Management Committee policy of hoping that the rain would defy gravity and not flow out the open outlet to the pitch below, failed miserably. We could bat with the wet patches we thought and a subsequent downpour made it clear we would be going to a bowl out. We were probably going to suffer because of the 110 overs played on the wicket on Sunday but in fairness to the 2nd XI bowlers most of them avoided pitching the ball on the wicket during their match. I believe Mr Bristow has a claim in for RSI ( repetitive strain injury) to his shoulders.
Kamal helped us to the preparations, and with eight recognised (with some form of recognition) bowlers in our team we looked good on paper. Our practise went well with three hits, however the pressure of the real event took its toll. Leinster went one up and our wicket keeper from Saturday, Matthew Quirke equalised; he is not just a centurion and wicket keeper but a bowler as well - he had hit in the practise as well. Leinster went 2-1 up and fortunately we never managed to hit after that.
So the cup run of 2009 came to an end – the 3rds lasted about two months longer than the other teams. Following our disappointment of the Whelan defeat at Merrion, we can now focus on the League where we are well placed.
A trip to Wexford awaits with our Academy players having to perform without the captain and vice captain but Wazza tells me Shammy is available; goodluck!
