WhitneyMoore League - Section B
Monday 2nd June
at Terenure

CYM having won the toss and electing to bat got off to a solid enough start until in the 16th over, with the score on 61, Ken McDonald (21) had a rush of blood to the head, came down the pitch to Rob Nandi and was promptly stumped. The introduction of Warwick Armstrong, the YMCA skipper, into the attack resulted in the wicket of the other CYM opener Steve Moore for 34. Armstrong bowling in tandem with Nandi then reduced CYM from 67-2 to 97-5 in 32 overs. The wickets included the CYM pro Adam Coetzee, who has struggled so far to show real form, his frustration was evident when he holed out at mid wicket chasing a deliver that he could have left. CYM can thank Colm Morgan for rescuing the situation as an additional 96 runs were added for the loss of 3 wickets. The runs came mainly from a 50 partnership with Keith McCarty (17) which left CYM 193 – 8 in their 50 overs and Morgan 53 not out. For YMCA the main wicket-takers were Rob Nandi, who returned figures of 3-21 off his 10 overs, and Warwick Armstrong who took 2 for 32 of his 10 over.

YMCA’s innings really never got started due to a combination of poor shot selection and a couple of fine catches by CYM. The first wicket fell in the 7th over with only 23 on the board, quickly followed 3 overs later with the addition of only 5 runs. In the 16th over YMCA had managed to get to 64-3 but then two wickets in consecutive balls from Darren Snell meant they slumped to 64 -5. They staged something of a recovery when Ben Dunk was joined by Ehtesham (Shami) Ahmed, but Ahmed’s style of play didn’t suit the job in hand and ignoring the advice of Dunk he got away with some rash strokes, till he chased a ball he should have left and was caught behind. With 24 overs gone YMCA found themselves 107-6 with an unfamiliar lower order batting to come. Dunk continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, with some big hitting including a huge six off a free hit which landed in the houses over the deep square leg boundary. But one big hit too many resulted in an excellent diving catch by Ken McDonald, running in from the deep cover boundary. The crowd enjoying their barbecue were suitable impressed, as was his team-mates. That left YMCA on 136 – 8 and along way off victory. The 9th wicket contributed a token 17 runs and it was ended when CYM’s Steve Moore took a good running catch over his shoulder at cover. YMCA added a further 3 runs to leave them all out for 156. Darren Snell was the best of the CYM bowlers returning figures of 4-43 of his 10 overs. Ken Brennan and Michael Launders but took 2, Brennan being especially economic going for just 26 off his 10 overs.
