2012 All Ireland Club Rankings
22 NOVEMBER 2012
Another season over, and the stats can now be evaluated. On the surface it looks as if little has changed. Waringstown and North Down still lead the way. The LCU still has five teams in the top ten and eight in the top twenty. But dig below that surface and a few things have changed. The LCU may have five teams in the top 10 (the same as 2008-10 - and they've never had six), but Leinster are the highest in fifth place.
It can not be denied that the NCU trio of Waringstown, North Down and now Instonians are now ahead of the pack. With Brigade also being above Leinster, it is plain to see that the standard in Leinster has dropped off a bit. However, keep digging. The NCU and NW may be ahead of the game at the very top, but beneath the exalted top 5, there is a big gap down to the rank and file clubs.
Division 1 in the LCU has been incredibly tight in the last couple of years, and not surprisingly, with all teams capable of beating each other, the bottom half of the LCU Division 1 is much stronger then its northern brethren. It puts into context the Irish Senior Cup victories by The Hills over Waringstown, North County over North Down and YMCA over Instonians - all days where the LCU sides raised their game.
So who are the big risers over the season? Eglinton went up 12 places to 30th, as their successful Senior 2 season ended up with twelve straight wins. Leinster surprised many in the LCU, romping to their 23rd Leinster Senior League title, and they went up 11 places to 5th in the country. There would be bitter sweet feelings from the third highest riser - YMCA were tipped by many to emerge triumphant from the battle that was 2012. They only had the Alan Murray Cup to show for their troubles, but good cup runs and a league second place meant that they rose nine places to 11th.
As always, there are just as many clubs for whom the season brings nothing but doom and gloom. Bonds Glen had a tough time all season, finishing bottom of teh North West's top division. They slipped eight places, the same as poor old Bangor. After finishing bottom of the NCU Premier league in 2011, they went from bad to worse in finishing bottom of Section 1 in 2012. The surprise "failure" for last year was Railway Union, who have slipped from 3rd to 7th on the back of a season that wasn't up to the exalted standards of the Park Avenue club. Saying that, fourth in the league, a Leinster Cup semi final and an Irish Cup quarter final isn't he end of the world.
So what will 2013 bring? Expect CIYMS to continue up the rankings, with the LCU clubs struggling to reach the top. There will be a new face though - Balbriggan will qualify for the rankings in 2013 - where will they enter?
