Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v North County 3rd XI
At Claremont Road
Senior 3 League
Only a win would suffice in our bid to pull out of the relegation zone and we got off to a great start by winning the toss and deciding to have a bowl first on a pretty decent deck.
After an initial break through from 'Shami' the North County top order batsmen got their heads down on a bouncy wicket against strong seam bowling.
With a change to spin the visitors looked at ease and it was only when Neel Bhandari got in on the act that things changed for YM. Picking up 3 wickets including the dangerman Singh 63 (a former YMer) and then in tandem with Kamal Merchant and Johhny Harte we started to exert some control. A score of around 160/170 would have been par for the course on a wicket that was still good.
However, North County rallied and they put up more than a decent total to finish on 223/9 from their allotted 50 overs.
Neel Bhandari led the way with 3/45, Johnny Harte & 'Shami' both picked up 2 wickets each.
It was a little disappointing as we trudged off to tea as the rain started to fall.
The rain did stop and we began our reply, the wicket was still good although there was a bit in it still for all the bowlers.
3 early wickets that of Streek, 'Shami' & Ross Johnson put us on the back foot once more at58/3.
But in the next 16 overs Carl Hosford and Stevie Walsh were superb putting on a fantastic partnership of 94. They started cautiously, consolidating and then buiding a match winning partnership, while all the time they punished any loose deliveries with powerful hitting.
It was just a pity they couldn't finish it off together. 'Walshie'(46, 6x4s, 1x6), justifying his selection after only arriving back from South Africa on a rugby tour, holed out to long off and after Carl Hosford (86, 12x4s, 1x6) and Johnny Harte put on another 39 runs for the 5th wicket, 'Hos' followed in similar fashion.
Score was now 191/5.
'Harty' and Tim Shannon then put on a little partnership with quick running nd powerful drives that looked like getting us home with ease. But YM like to give the opposition a chance and both fell to that man Singh.
Score: 216/7.
There was a little moment where deep breaths were taken as memories of recent defeats sprung to mind, but fear not, fittingly Dale McDonough-Kincaid and Neel Bhandari who had both played a major part in our 3 wins on the trot saw us home to win by 3 wickets.
It was a good feeling with a dash of relief added to the mix.
To finish the season with 3 wins on the bounce was an outstanding effort in a difficult season. Now we await for points to be added up and the table to be finalised but we should have done enough to finish out of the bottom 2 or 3 and thus have a go at this league again next year.
Watch this space______!
All the players involved in the last 3 matches played their part and should take great credit from their own individual performances in a great team effort
Season End:
The final results of this league campaign showed that YM has the players to compete at this level, both experienced players and young up and coming players.
However, what we must aspire to is Senior 2 cricket or whatever it will be called next year after the re-vamp of the Leinster Senior Leagues. To close the gap between what league our 1st team players will play in and what we play in at the moment. The difference in standard is massive.
To do this total commitment is needed. This year we used over 30 players in 15 league & cup games. Far too many.
With commitment we must then look at the way we practice and this combination will enable us to build. The experience, both highs and lows, of this season will stand us in good stead.
