Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v Balbriggan 1st XI
At Claremont Road
Senior 3 League
This was definitely a game that got away. Balbriggan were there for the taking but in the end they proved why they are top of this league and why we are perilously close to the bottom.
For once we won a toss and inserted the visitors on a pretty good pitch with enough movement to cause trouble to the top order.
2 early wickets, at last, gave us the early impetus and at 14/2 we had some sort of control, a 3rd wicket partnership of 52 aided by wides, poor fielding and a bit of luck saw the visitors fight back. Score: 66/2.
Then with the introduction of Rory Anderson (3/14) and Tim Shannon (1/40) we took another 3 wickets as Balbriggan stuttered to 86/5.
Dropped catches and more poor ground fielding allowed a 6th wicket partnership of 61 to sway the match back in favour of the visitors as the score now stood at 147/6.
All the bowlers toiled away admirably but were in truth never backed up in the field.
Rory Anderson bowled very well (in hindsight he should have bowled more, as an U17 player he is only allowed bowl 6 overs at a time) took a good catch and made a run out. Tim Shannon bowled much better than his figures read, dropped catches stopped him from picking up more wickets. Neel Bhandari bowled with considerable control and was unlucky not to take wickets. Kamal Merchant was also unlucky not to pick up wickets before he injured himself.
Umar Jehangir bowled within himself and lacked the heart and desire to really bowl quick and straight on a helpful wicket. Wides are still a problem.
Shami started off very well taking a wicket in his first over but with final figures of 10-0-50-1, this was also very disappointing.
A final score in the region of 150 would have been just reward for the bowlers but for reasons mentioned above Balbriggan recorded a total of 184/8 off their 50 overs.
After tea, the young YM openers were dismissed quickly and at 13/2 we had a similar start to the visitors. Shami (32) played a typical 'Shami' innings, looked really good, hit some super shots and then gave it all away. After recovering to 60/2 he then charged the spinner and was stumped. Such a waste.
After Streek (21) was run out, the wickets tumbled, only Marty Ridgeway (out from retirement) and Anderson (14*) topping off a fine all round game, got into double figures.
Kamal Merchant must consider himself very unlucky, after smashing a ball onto his pads he was given out lbw. The umpires were poor today.
The rest of the batsmen made it too easy for the Balbriggan bowlers and did not value their wickets more dearly. The inability to build partnerships, consolidate after wickets have fallen and bat out our allocation of overs are a concern. The application to build an innings is very clearly missing.
Overall very disappointing.
