Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v North Kildare 1st XI
At Claremont Road
Senior 3 League
Looking to build on last weeks victory in Clontarf, YM at last won a toss and batted first on a slow sluggish pitch. Returning to the team were the 4 Young Guns namely C.Minch, N.Noonan, Johan & Josh Van De Flier.
21 runs came off the first 2 overs but this was deceiving as McCoy (20) looked like he was playing in a Twenty20 game! He did not last long and was out in the 4th over.
In truth he could have been out to any of the balls he faced and was soon followed back to the hutch by Minch. At 32/2 with Johnson (22) looking in good nick what was needed was consolidation and to build a partnership.
However 'Shami' strolled to the wicket and with that all logic goes out the window. Johnson first of all smacked a full toss to mid-wicket and then just to confirm anything others can do 'Shami' can do better, Shami hit another full toss tamely to cover. 72/4 after 15 overs.
Walsh (39) and Streek (18) battled away while not totally convincing and put together a 5th wicket partnership of 67.
A total in excess of 200 was on the cards from here but after Streek was dismissed to leave the score on 139/5 and more crucially Walsh, who unluckily swept a ball onto his stumps, the total now read 145/6.
After that try as the other batsmen did, only 52 runs were scored off the last 13 overs.
The innings closed on a competitive 191/9, aided by an incredible 37 wides/no balls.
In reply the North Kildare innings started pretty much the same as the YM innings had. Crash! Bang! Wallop! as the first over went for 15.
One straight hit for 6 into an adjoining back garden was obviously not appreciated as soon after that the smoke of a lost but by now burning 'Kookaburra' was clearly visible for all to see...
Umar Jehangir got into the action bowling Holland who played across the line of a straight ball, then Neavyn who missed an even straighter one and finally Walshe, again bowled gave YM the early strikes needed.
Unfortunately, North Kildare were still in the game because YM continued to bowl wide after wide after wide. This was very dissapointing considering the home team had seen North Kildare suffer when they bowled so many wides and how difficult it was to score runs off the bat on a slow wicket.
The contest ebbed and flowed, the North Kildare Captain Phipps kept the scoreboard ticking over and YM took 2 more wickets to leave the score on 99/5.
A 6th wicket partnership of 50 between Phipps (69) and Clarke (19) was to be crucial.
YM did have chances to dismiss both batsmen but North Kildare were on top and more importantly the visitors skipper was still in.
2 more wickets fell, one to a brilliant catch by Johan Van De Flier and then another wicket late on to leave the score at 188/8.
But the visitors kept their cool and got home by 2 wickets for a derserving win.
Umar Jehangir bowled well taking 3/29 and Neel Bhandari picked up crucial wickets taking 3/36, however the wides (44) in total killed YM and is unacceptable at this level.
Yes North Kildare also bowled a lot but we had the advantage of knowing what line to bowl and what not to do. In this we failed and with it the match.
We take on the same opponents next week in their ground and hope that we have learned from the glaring mistakes we made in this game.
