This was the strongest 2nd XI the club had fielded so far this season, but that is not even worth the paper its written on if players dont take on the responsibility and make it count on the pitch.

Things started well, we even won the toss and batted first on a decent wicket, some grass allowing the ball to move around and a knee-high bounce allbeit a little slow and a quick outfield.
The 2 openers Minch (16) and Shami (11) got us going but we lost 3 wkts too early in the innings but at 64/3 with J.Harte (33) and G.McCoy (12) at the wicket a re-building job was what we needed. However that was halted as another batch of wickets saw YM slump to 88/7.
Simple shot selection was the reason.
To end on a total of 157 was due to Jimmy Fitz' (19) & Johan Van De Flier (13) who put on 33 for the 8th wkt and then another 32 from the ICC Media Officer & Neel Bhandari (21*) for the 9th wkt.
These 3 batted with great application and no little skill and more importantly most of the overs.

156 gave us a second chance at winning this game. Now to the bowlers...
The opening spell by the YM bowlers was simply awful. Bowling both sides of the wicket and wasting too many balls made the Phoenix openers' job so much easier.
The opening partnership of 50+ (in only 7 overs) included 25 extras most of them wides/byes (which gave the keeper no chance to stop).
It was a missed opportunity and try as J.Harte (3/27) did it gave the impetus to the home side and the flow of runs was never really checked as the fielding was also found wanting.
4 wickets were taken and 2 catches were dropped but Phoenix reached their target with over 25 overs to spare.

Taking into account everything this was the most fustrating defeat of the season. Too many contributed nothing of substance and left the team well short.

The 2nds now have at least 11 league games to play and a huge effort is needed just to stay in this league.
Next up Clontarf in Castle Avenue. Who's up for it__________?
