Match report YMCA 3rd XI v Avondale 1st XI
At Avondale
Intermediate A League

We lost the toss and Avondale decided to make first use of the mat which traditionally is bouncy.
We opened with the tried and tested partnership of David Cooke and Tim Shannon who both bowled very tidy spells (DC 8 overs 1 wicket for 13). The Avondale captain,
who hits the ball hard, was caught and bowled by Dave Cooke and the other young Avondale opener was joined by another hard hitting batsman who put away any bad balls. The change bowlers were treated with disdain with anything short or over-pitched being dispatched. John Orr, who has bowled well in the nets, was given his opportunity and he proceeded to make the most of it getting in amongst the middle order and staking a claim on the YM helmet. Niall Noonan bowled economically also and there was very little between him (4.4-0-11-4) and John (5-0-14-5). The continuous fall of wickets kept us interested on a warm afternoon and a rugby pitch outfield that made the fielding difficult and reduced the number of boundaries. Seven bowlers bowled and we bowled – well, Niall and John bowled - Avondale out in 28.4 overs for 128 on the scoreboard and 117 in the scorebook. The captains conferred and negotiated with a score of 124 being agreed as being our target.
Based on his fine century on Thursday, Matthew was asked to open with Niall. Both batted very sensibly hitting the bad balls but generally showing patience. At drinks, both were in their twenties. Niall accelerated immediately after and got most of the strike for the next four overs. Niall moved to his fifty before Matthew was caught for 27. The pair had shared the 3rds best opening partnership of 92 of the season. Tim joined Niall and saw us to the target of 125. Niall finished on an unbeaten 68.
It was a good win with maximum points based on great performances by Niall, John and Matthew and it made up for the Whelan Cup saga.
