Match report
YMCA 3rd XI v Rush 3rd XI
At Kenure Park, Rush
Intermediate Cup 1st Rd.
A damp morning with some rain and it looked more like a sea mist hanging over Rush when we arrived. No opposition but kids on the pitch was explained by a presumption on their part that it was a 1.30 start. The Rush skipper informed me the sea mist was coming from the west. I was puzzled by this comment but decided to bat on the basis of putting the runs on the board is the best approach to such a match. Rush CC was, as ever, in good shape, but we were on the far side of the square so there were three short boundaries and one very large one ( perfect for Johnny “big arm” Byrnes to patrol)
Daveed and Niall (returning having finished his exams) opened and looked comfortable until Niall mis-timed a shot when on 15. Daveed did likewise shortly afterwards leaving us on 20something for 2. Tim put the head down and the skipper joined him. After flashing hard, he edged his second ball for four. The score moved along before the skipper edged the ball onto his stumps. Andrew Mowett looked good as well and was joined by Neel Bhandari. The first six batsman all made it to fifteen with the skipper top scoring on 18 if you believe the scorers or 26 or more if you accept his version of events.
The lower order did not farewell with only Matthew Quirke playing sensibly and unlucky not to find the gap on several occasions. Ravi pushed a single before going for a trademark swing which resulted in the sound of ball on stumps (yes Lewie he does bat like that). Again we failed to bat our overs with the last five batsmen contributing 5 runs between them. But Rush did help us with poor fielding, over throws, 23 byes and 9 wides in a total of 35 extras. We finished on 149.
We got an early breakthrough with Tim bowling very well and getting enough lift to make it uncomfortable for the batsmen. He was supported by DC who wobbled the ball in the mist and Rush ended up on 16 for 3 and then 24 for 4. Both bowled their 8 overs straight (Tim 2 for 25 and DC 4 for 33) before Neelo and Niall Noonan (who had impressed at nets) took over. But the experience of some of the Rush team helped bring the score to 53 for 6 and then 76 for 7. At that point the Rush skipper and his brother knuckled down and took their singles as well as hitting the bad ball to the short boundaries. They put on fifty runs before Neelo got the important wicket at 126. A couple of singles brought the score into the 130s and Neelo got the ninth wicket (his third wicket). With less than twenty needed we were getting nervous before Ravi showed he can catch the ball (on his own bowling anyway) with a diving c & b much the elation of all and the relief of the skipper.
The difference between the two teams was 14 runs: Daveed kept very well and in comparison to Rush’s 35 extras we only gave a way 16. Tim and Andrew both saved runs in the field and it was one of those matches that could have come down to a misfield. It’s always good to win in the cup and we hope we can do likewise in Merrion tomorrow night in the Whelan. And our reward is a home match against Leinster or Pembroke.
Thanks to Alistair Green who was our twelfth man.
