WhitneyMoore League - Section B
Sunday 31st August
at Claremont Road
YMCA in their last home game of the season had a comprehensive win over CYM beating them by 165 wins and in the process making it one all between the YM’s this season.
YMCA amassed an impressive 289 for 6 in their 50 overs, the total was built off a 118 run 3rd wicket partnership between Ben Dunk and Alan Lewis. The pair came together in the 19th over with YMCA on 70 for 2, McCoy (16) and Nandi (20) already back in the pavilion. Lewis and Dunk made steady progress with both batsmen capitalising on some loose CYM bowling, Lewis looked in particularly good form. Dunk was the first of the pair to pass his half century (54 balls, 69 mins), a couple of overs later Lewis passed his (66 balls, 66 mins). CYM eventually broke the partnership in the 38th over when Dunk was out LBW for 63 with the score on 188. Lewis was joined by Angus Dunlop and the pair added another 45 runs for the 4th wicket to leave YMCA on 233 for 4 after 45 overs when Dunlop (15) was out LBW. With wickets in hand YMCA push for runs increased however Lewis, tiring significantly, was run out struggling to make his ground for a second run, 9 runs short of a deserved century. That left YMCA 254 for 5 which became 263 for 6 in the next over, but Paul Beacroft (14*) and Carl Hosford (11*) added 26 runs in the last two and a bit overs to leave YMCA well pleased with their score of 289-6. Less impressed were CYM as they gave away 44 extras in the total. Wickets were evenly distributed around the CYM bowlers, Adam Coetzee was the most economic with figures of 1-40 off his 10.
For CYM to make a fist of chasing the total they needed a solid start but unfortunately this didn’t happen as they found themselves 4 for 2 after the first 2 over. Paul Beacroft and Adam Rice the YMCA bowlers to pick up wickets in their first overs. Something of a recovery was staged as Adam Coetzee and Steve Moore took the score to 52 before Beacroft had Cortzee LBW for 29 in the 13th over. Ehtesham (Shami) Ahmed was introduced to the attack next over with immediate effect to leave CYM in real trouble at 53-4. The next over swung the game decisively in YMCA’s favour as Beacroft took three wickets with balls 2, 3, & 5 of the over. Included was a stunting one handed catch at second slip by Alan Lewis diving low down to his right to remove opener Steve Moore who had made a gritty 14 runs. There was now no way back for CYM and Beacroft capped an excellent spell of bowling as he picked up a “Birmingham 6” in his next over to leave CYM 62-8 after 17 overs and staring a score less 100 in the face. The fact they avoided the humiliation was thanks to a knock of 37 from Ken Brennan, not know for his batting, he was able supported by Keith McCarthy. The pair put on 36 runs for the 9th wicket before McCarthy (21) offered up a caught and bowled to Ben Dunk having just been introduced to the attack. Brennan was then joined by Darren Snell and the pair took CYM score past 100 but 24 runs later Brennan, playing only as he knows how, was caught in the deep going for one big hit too many. CYM were all out for 124 in 25.2 overs. For YMCA Beacroft’s “Birmingham 6” came at a cost of only 20 runs, Ben Dunk picked up the last wickets two for 13 runs off 1.2 overs.
