Match report THE first XI made an excellent start to what we hope will be a campaign that ends with the one last trophy that had eluded the Claremont Road trophy cabinet.

The Irish Senior Cup has been going for 34 years and the furthest YMCA has gone is the semi-finals, which was achieved on four occasions. Each time we lost to the eventual tournament winners: 1988 (Lurgan), 1992 (Waringstown), 1998 (Strabane) and 2013 (Clontarf).

With a bit of weather about there was concern about the visit to three-times winners North Down ever taking place, and when YM won the toss captain Simmi Singh opted to bowl. Antipodean opening pair James Parkinson and Tom Fisher were on top form and within six overs the openers were back in the hutch.

Malan steadied things for the Comber side, but then it was a case of ENTER THE YAK!

Yaqoob was magnificent, taking 4-24 off his five overs, and Umar Jehangir brought some balance to the attack. With the North Down men chasing runs Simmi picked up 2-18 and they ended on 110-9 off 24.

Duckworth-Lewis calculations set YM a target of 108 off 24 overs, but nothing was going to stop the Fisher/Tector opening partnership and they kept pace with each other through the innings and reached the target in the 18th over. Fish was unbeaten on 50 off 55 balls (6 fours) and Jack 46 off 51 (4 fours and 1 six).

With a few games refixed, the other Leinster sides to win were Phoenix, North County, The Hills and Pembroke, with Leinster and Clontarf going out. Claremont Road graduate Reiny Strydom made a 100 off just 48 balls.

The draw for the next round will be made this week, and on we go!
