Match report YMCA 2ND XI V LAOIS 1ST XI
AT CLAREMONT ROAD

First league match of the season and a home game on a sunny but windy day at Claremont Road against Laois CC who were relegated from Divison 3 in 2010.
The home side had a mixture of the old, the new and the young and were invited to bat first on a firm wicket albeit with up and down bounce. Simon Wilson-Moore (31) dominated in an opening stand of 46 with Matthew Quirke. Salman Ali (47) then put on 99 runs with Quirke for the 2nd wicket. After 38 overs and with the scoreboard reading 145/1 a final total of 220+ was on the cards. However, 3 quick wickets pegged YM back. Cameos from Streek (20) and Harte (24) did lift the final total over 200, but a little under par after some hard yakka from the top order.
In reply Laois started off with great gusto helped by some indifferent YM bowling. Padraic Flanagan took a great catch off Waz Armstrong from a high upper cut down at 3rd man. Laois cashed in on some loose bowling and took the score to 64 in under 9 overs before Simon Wilson-Moore, who had come on to help bring back some control for the home side, took the 2nd wicket. Laois continued to punish any loose bowling and were scoring quickly. Armstrong took a 3rd wicket at 79 with only 11 overs gone. Another partnership took the visitors to 111/3 (19 overs) before the spin twins of Yaqoob Ali and Johnny Harte spun their webs of magic, backed up by some good fielding, including a run out from the boundary by Andrew Mowatt and a high tumbling catch from Wilson-Moore. 111/3 became 138 all out as both Ali (4/24) and Harte (2/13) dismissed the visitors in under 27 overs. Special mention of Matthew Quirke who was thrown in at the deep end to keep wicket, which he did admirably and with no little skill, to add to his patient 41 at the top of the order.
So a good start to another league campaign, much to build on and lots to work on, but hey it's good to be back.
Next week a promoted team in Mullingar CC again at Claremont Road.
