Match report
YMCA 2nd XI v Phoenix 2nd XI
At The Phoenix Park
Senior 2 Cup 2nd Rd.
After defeating North County 2nd XI in the previous round (a league above us) we visited Phoenix (a team we had already beaten in our league) in splendid sunshine.
Winning the toss we bowled first on a decent deck albeit a tad slow.
We started well enough helped with a little luck and Phoenix found themselves 29/4 and lots to do. It could have been so much better at the first drinks break when Umar Jehangir put down a relatively easy chance of his own bowling. However with this reprieve Cavanagh (33) got his head down chanced his arm and along with Anders (42) battled their way to a 5th wicket partnership of 77. The bowling was ok but it was not helped by YM bowling the wrong line and length. Wides still continue to mount.
What followed in hindsight was the winning partnership of the game as Khan (66) joined Anders to record a 6th wicket partnership of 84. Playing their shots and taking the odd chance they cruised towards 200. Chris Minch (2/10) bowled very well at the death and the final total of 209 was very respectable, but probably 70 too many on this wicket.
After tea, the YM reply just never got going against reasonable bowling. Losing Minch and Shami far too early. Streek (27), Owais Ahad Quershi (30) and Extras (25) made up 82 of the 117 runs scored. Batsmen got bogged down stuck in their creases and became shotless. It was a poor effort to chase down the target and lacked any real conviction or application.
This has now become a common thread with the batting when the usual suspects don't get big runs, you wonder where they will come from. Too many times batsmen don't give themselves a chance by simply occupying the crease to push the ball around, keep the scoreboard ticking over and build an innings.
Phoenix deserved their win and take a place in the semi-finals.
There are now 10 league games to play and a big effort is needed from all to finish as high up the league table as possible. But above all it is time for individuals to show their undoubted promise and prove the doubters wrong.
