Match report YMCA 2nd XI v Oak Hill 1st XI

On a nice sunny day with a good breeze and a noisy crowd, well 1 noisy person in attendence, YM had an up and down performance against league leaders Oak Hill.
Batting first YM started slowly against tight bowling, finding runs hard to score off the bat. The 1st wicket fell at 23, Chris Minch chipping a ball off his legs to square leg for a comfortable catch. Streek was then yorked by Yogesh and Sean Mcauley was sold a dummy by Shami, his batting partner and run out. Score 47/3 in the 17th over.
Shami 46 (5x4s, 1x6) and Matthew Quirke set about re-building the innings with some fine shots and had done all the hard work when Shami decide to run across his stumps and hit the ball square on the leg side. Result: Bowled. This was a disappointing end to a fine innings and more fustrating because he had just received 4 wides in a row before his rash choice of shots. The 4th wicket realised 83 runs in about 21 overs and the scoreboard read 134/4 at the end of the 38th over.
Stevie Walsh, who had been chauffeured to Oak Hill, came and went too quickly. Andrew Mowatt hit an all too brief cameo of 17 as he put on 44 with Quirke 54 (5x4s) for the 6th wicket. Matthew Quirke played very well for his 50 with some fine shots. However the run-rate had not increased as it should of towards the end of the innings. Johnny Harte tried to up the tempo but was not in long enough and it was left to Neel Bhandari and Umar Jehangir to lift the score over 200, helped by some big hitting in the last over when 15 runs were scored.
It was a good ending to the innings but basic errors in terms of running between the wickets and pinching singles etc, etc meant that the final score of 216/8 was a little under par.
Only 72 runs were scored from the last 12 overs with 6 wickets in hand.
Oak Hill helped bump up the score with 49 extras, 28 of them wides.

Tea came and went in which Shami & Umar conveniently forgot about Ramadan, (please don't tell Kamal!)
Oak Hill lost an early enough wicket, Warwick Armstrong bowling a 'jaffa' to Yogesh. Could he be in YM colours next season?
However, after that D.Joyce (48) and N.Beuck (44) punished any loose bowling hitting the boundary with ease. The YM bowling lost its discipline and the lengths were all wrong. They quickly took the score to 92 before Johnny Harte found the edge of Joyce's bat and Stevie Walsh took a good catch standing up to the wicket. Beuck went just after the drinks break with the score on 121.
This was the time when YM had an opportunity to fight back, the scoring rate dropped a little and Oak Hill had to dig deep at first. But this was as good as it got for YM as a combination of good batting from Fitzsimons (57*) & Cannon (41*) and sluggish bowling, unable to break partnerships, let Oak Hill ease to victory.
Only 4 wides were bowled in 45 overs but that inabilty to take wickets proved costly once again.
