Match report YMCA 2nd XI v Merrion 2nd XI
At Anglesea Road
Leinster Division 4 League

Debuts: M.Kirk, C.Donnelly.

With 8 players aged between 14 & 18 this was by far the youngest side YM had fielded in the 2nd XI for years, however there is talent in the ranks especially at U15 level.
Merrion had the more experience, won the toss and inserted YM into bat. Dale McDonough-Kincaid went early, but Josh Van Der Flier battled hard as he helped put on 61 for the 2nd wicket. His brother Johan batted just as well getting the side to over the 100 mark in the 25th over. Two quick wickets soon followed as the home side fought back. Next in was Andrew Mowatt (37) who played positively and with much promise. With Streek he put on 56 in 10 overs as the scoreboard read 159/4 in the 37th over.
However, Streek went for 80 (12x4s, 1x6) and the tail showed their inexperience.
There were 3 run outs, 2 needless, the third that of Michael Kirk, making his debut, was unfortunate. Mowatt hit the ball hard back to the bowler who dropped a catch but the rebound fell onto the stumps with Kirk out of his ground.
The last 6 wkts fell for only 10 runs in 7 overs as a promising score collapsed dramatically. A score of 200+ should have been on the cards.

In reply Merrion lost an early wicket when Umar Jehangir bowled Brown, beaten for pace. All the bowlers used up front tried hard as they aimed for the right line and length. The ground fielding was very good. Rory Anderson took the 2nd wicket at 60. However the Merrion batsmen continued to play their shots and looked fairly comfortable. At 105/2 Callum Donnelly, also making his debut, was introduced and took a wicket with his 2nd ball, James Smith taking a good catch at mid-on. Unfortunately 'JimJam' split the webbing between two fingers and had to leave the field. YM continued with 10 men. Donnelly took a 2nd wicket with the score on 116/4 and YM were fighting back hard. However Jeff Short (30*) stood firm and took the home side closer to victory. Two late wickets showed much desire from YM when it would have been easy to give up and Merrion were made to work hard for their win. Callum Donnelly bowled very well taking 2/21. Neel Bhandari backed him up as he finished with figures of 10-0-34-1. In general all the bowling was good and the groung fielding was excellent. 2 dropped catches in the middle of the innings could have made the result much closer.
However, this was a very encouraging performance from this young YM side against their more experienced counterparts. It should show them that they are capable at this level and give them the impetus to make great strides from here to the end of the season.
