Match report YMCA 2nd XI v North County 2nd XI
At Claremont Road.
Senior 2 Cup 1st Rd.


After two disappointing losses the 2nd XI turned their attentions to the Senior 2 Cup as North County 2nds visited Claremont Road. Riding high in Division 3 North County would be a true test for a strong all round YM team.
The visitors won the toss and batted on a spicy pitch with uneven bounce.
Warwick Armstrong and Wajih Iqbal bowled with pace from the outset and within 11 overs had reduced the visitors to 25/2. Wazza was particularly accurate in his first spell of 7-2-10-2. Stuart McCready then came on and proceeded to bowl like only Smacker can, controlling the game for YM as the North County batsmen struggled to cope with his line, accuracy and pace. The only missing ingrediant were wickets. Simon-Wilson-Moore bowled his overs straight through picking up 3 wickets at just the right times and beat the bat consistently. And Neel Bhandari who came on at a difficult time bowled very well also taking 3 wickets to go along with his 3 catches, one of his own bowling. In fact the fielding was to be a highlight throughout as 8 catches were held. The pick of them starting with Chris Minch plucking one out of the sky above his head, then Shami taking a good running catch two handed on the long off boundary, Stevie Walsh then took a flying one-handed catch diving to his right, to get rid off old boy Manmeet Singh and finally Owais Ahad Quershi holding onto an excellent grab at mid-on high above his head. With Walshie also keeping wicket very well the ground fielding and catching was a marked improvement from the previous outing.
A happy YM camp went into tea confident.

In reply the game moved on rapidly in YMs favour as openers Chris Minch 11 (1x4) and Stuart McCready 36 (4x4s, 2x6s) put on 51 for the 1st wicket in the first 10 overs. They took the attack to the North County bowlers and set up the game perfectly. And although both fell in the space of an over it enabled Ehtesham 'Shami' Ahmed 62 (7x4s, 1x6) and David Streek 35* (3x4s, 1x6) to build a partnership of 101 in 22 overs for the 3rd wicket. Shami was the dominant partner and played very well with shots all around the ground, his 50 coming off 60 balls in 65 minutes, the only pity being that he was dismissed with only 3 runs needed for victory.
Winning by 7 wkts was a great satisfaction and was set up by the great bowling and fielding. There were many good individual performances and if all players can make themselves available for the next round a good Cup run could be on the cards.
